Aciclovir

An antiviral drug that is especially effective against herpes simplex viruses, herpes zoster (lichen) and chickenpox. It is included in the List of Vital and Essential Drugs for Medical Use. Therapy for both primary and secondary infections of the skin and mucous membranes caused by Herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2, including genital herpes. In treating herpes Aciclovir prevents eruption of new skin lesions, reduces the likelihood of skin dissemination and visceral complications, accelerates crusting, and relieves pain in the acute phase of Varicella zoster virus.
